Pham Thai Buong (1915 - 1974)
Pham Thai Buong is a hero of Tra Vinh province, his name was named after a high school in Tra Vinh provincial city.

Pham Thai Buong’s alias is Le Thanh Nhan, he was born in 1915 in My Cam commune, Cang Long district, Tra Vinh province. His father is Pham Thoi, who worked as a roadmender in Tra Vinh. Because of the family’s difficult economy situation, he had to work as a buider when he was 15. He was intelligent and hard-working so after a short time, he became a skilled builder.  

In 1937, the Indochinese movement from large cities spreaded throughout his homeland. Many demonstrations, speeches calling for freedom, democracy, demand for improvement of life advocated by the Communists in Tra Vinh attracted many classes of people involved, including the builder Pham Thai Buong. Gradually enlightened, in 1938, he joined the Friendship Association and worked actively in the local craftsmen. In June 1938, Pham Thai Buong was admitted to the Indochinese Communist Party. In early 1939, he was a member of Tra Vinh Interim Party Committee.

In early 1940, he was appointed to be Secretary of Tra Vinh Provincial Party Committee. Meanwhile, Ben Tre has the same boundary with Tra Vinh, Co Chien River, through the colonial terrorist attacks, most of the Party's facilities were disintegrated, Secretary of Provincial Party Committee and many leaders of districts were detained in the French secret network. Under that situation, Pham Thai Buong was appointed to be Secretary of Ben Tre Party Committee. Along with the remaining comrades after the persecution, he began to consolidate the movement, rebuild the Party base in Mo Cay, Giong Trom and Ba Tri districts.
 
By the time the rebellion of the South broke out (1940), Ben Tre Provincial Party led the insurgency to actively respond to the orders. The uprising failed, the French colony cracked down the movement. Pham Thai Buong and most of the members of Ben Tre Party Committee were arrested in turn. In the imperial prison, they were tortured many times, but Pham Thai Buong still kept his sense of purpose and uprightness, didn’t declare anything that was detrimental to the movement. He was sentenced 10 years in prison and exiled to Con Dao.

When the August uprising was victorious, the revolutionary government dispatched a delegation to take the means of transport to Con Dao to pick up the comrades detained. Pham Thai Buong was on the first train. Just arrived home, he was pale and weak, but because of the urgency situation, he rushed to work. As the Deputy Secretary of Tra Vinh Provincial Party Committee, Pham Thai Buong along with key leaders of the province embarked on building a new government, strengthening the national unity front. At the same time, provided intensive military courses and political training to deal with the colonial conspiracy.

On September 23, 1945, French invaders attacked Saigon, then expanded the war to the entire South. During the period of being Secretary of Tra Vinh Provincial Party Committee (1946-1948), Pham Thai Buong had a broad vision, had good policies and advocates such as ethnic solidarity, implementing land policy of the revolution, building the local armed forces ... so that the resistance movement in Tra Vinh soon stabilized, the revolutionary government has been strengthened step by step. In 1948, he was elected to the Party Zone 8, assigned to take responsibility three provinces of Vinh Long, Tra Vinh and Ben Tre. Also in June this year, he was appointed to be Secretary of Ben Tre Party.

In October 1949, Pham Thai Buong was appointed to be the Standing Committee of Party Zone 8, in charge of personnel organization. In early 1953, he was sent to the Central Training Course opening in the Party Zone 5. Following the Geneva Accord (July 1954), he led the delegation of the Central Government to communicate the truce agreement in the provinces of Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, Ben Tre.

From 1954 to 1959, he was member of the Southern Party Committee, Secretary of Inter - Provincial Party Committee of the West.

During the 3rd National Congress of the Vietnam Workers' Party, he was elected as an alternate member of the Central Communist Party Committee.

In 1963, he was in charge of receiving military supplies for the Southern battlefield. By the end of 1965, he was the Central Standing Member of the South. In 1969, he was Secretary of Party Zone 9.
In March 1972, he was an official member of the Central Communist Party Committee of Vietnam. In a serious illness, he passed away on January 29, 1974, at a resistance base at the Zone Party 9.

Pham Thai Buong has devoted his life to the revolution since his youth. His is a shining example of devotion to the country in front of the power of the enemy, as well as the difficulties.
